I recently joined a Leadership Lab on: “Who are you as a leader when AI has all the answers?”
Great question, right? It got me thinking about the difficult conversations leaders have every day.
Today, a leader can ask AI how to handle team conflict, give difficult feedback, or prepare for a conversation with an employee. AI can help with the words, questions, and the different ways the conversation might go. So far, so good. A recent Harvard Business Review IdeaCast makes a similar point: AI can help leaders prepare and practice, but human judgment still needs to be “at the helm.”
The real challenge happens when the conversation starts – reading body language, feeling the tension, recognizing when something isn’t landing, and knowing when to change your approach.
That’s the part AI can’t do for you.
Before a difficult conversation, AI can help you:
- Organize your thoughts.
- Consider another perspective.
- Identify questions you may have missed. (Blind spot?)
- Practice possible responses.
- Challenge your assumptions. (My favorite)
Instead of asking AI, “Tell me why I’m right,” try asking, “What might I be missing?” AI can give you ten ways to have a difficult conversation, but it can’t tell you which one THIS employee needs from THIS leader at THIS moment. You have to ask the question, listen to the answer, pay attention to what’s NOT being said, and adapt.
The conversation you practiced may not be the conversation you end up having, and that’s okay. Good communication isn’t about following the perfect script. It’s about understanding the person sitting across from you. What do they need from you? More information? Less? Time to process? Reassurance? Or do they need you to get to the point?
AI can process a lot of data, but it doesn’t know your employee the way you should. Leadership still comes down to knowing your people, listening, having the difficult conversation, and taking responsibility for what happens next.
AI can help you practice the conversation. You still have to have it.
And that’s Leadership 101.
The hard coversations don’t get easier by waiting. Schedule a call and let’s talk.
