Let me just start by saying I’m a die-hard Philadelphia Eagles fan, so even clicking on the article link felt like a betrayal.🫢 However, I can’t help but acknowledge this guy as a strong and respected leader by his teammates. Last week the Harvard Business Review published an article with past Dean of Harvard Business School Nitin Nohria and Tom Brady, legendary quarterback of The Patriots, \”Tom Brady on the Art of Leading Teammates.\”

In the article Nitin and Tom outline seven key behaviors for successful team leadership, but one in particular stands out for me and something I emphasize with every single one of my executive clients:

\”Recognize teammates’ individual psychology and the best ways to motivate them.\”

When it comes to players, some are motivated by attention, money, and winning championships. The same is true in organizations: ALL employees are motivated by different drivers. The paycheck drives some people, while others’ priorities may be recognition, work-life balance, professional development, and company values. The comparison between sports and the workplace isn’t just interesting to sports fans, it also provides valuable insight into the complexities of team motivation within organizations.

The premise is the same, and it is an essential skill to learn. Successful leaders invest time to understand what drives each of their employees and customize incentives and programs that enhance their motivation.
