Have you ever felt that “back-to-school” energy when you returned to work in September? It makes sense – we’re more relaxed, and maybe you’ve had time to reflect on where you are in your career or what changes you’re ready to make.

I thought it was just me, but Psychologists call this the “fresh start effect.” September provides us with a clean slate and a cue to action. However, this shift can also bring mixed feelings, from excitement to anxiety (e.g., meeting your 4th quarter revenue goal ). Taking the time to explore these emotions can help you move forward with clarity.

So, how can you optimize this “back to school” vibe and avoid the overwhelm:

Leaders:

  • Re-align your team and priorities: Hold a short “September Kickoff” meeting to re-prioritize projects and eliminate tasks that don’t align with your year-end goals. (improving communication and productivity)
  • Re-energize the culture with your presence: Block time on your calendar to walk the floor or attend team meetings (in-person and virtual). You’d be surprised at the impact your presence can have on your employees.
  • Reset expectations: Provide clear direction on roles and responsibilities for the rest of the year.
  • Invest in professional development: What training and mentorship resources are available for your team based on their goals?

Employees:

  • Self-Reflection: What’s working? What’s not? What still motivates you? (create a stop, start, continue list)
  • Set realistic goals: Aim for clarity, not overload. (quality vs. quantity). How can you measure your progress?
  • Create structure: Find the routine that works for you (time blocking, limiting meetings). Protect your energy – the holidays are just around the corner.🙄
  • Increase visibility: Reconnect with colleagues and strengthen internal and external networks.

September is more than new notebooks (or apps). It’s a simple lesson: Use this fresh-start energy to reset your habits, re-engage with your team, and refocus on what really matters most.
